Matthew 5:19-20 warns that relaxing any commandment or not exceeding the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees means not entering the kingdom of heaven. Pharisees were a religious movement seeking perfect obedience to the Torah, believing sin prevented prophetic promises from being fulfilled.
