Summary

Constraint-based lexicalism (CBL) is a set of linguistic theories with two main design properties: strong lexicalism, where morphology and syntax are separate, and constraint-based architecture, where a grammar is stated as a set of constraints on possible linguistic objects. The two main contemporary theories that embrace both lexicalism and constraint-based architecture are Lexical Functional Grammar (LFG) and Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG). Research in CBL frameworks has focused on the interface between morphology and syntax, including case stacking, deponency, agreement features, and syncretism, as well as linguistic phenomena that challenge strong lexicalism, such as pronominal affixes, portmanteau elements, and discontinuous affixation. Despite the importance of morphology in CBL, relatively little attention has been devoted to the modelling of morphology proper, with most work focusing on the syntax-morphology interface.
