The UK television industry is facing a crisis due to a "brain drain" of highly skilled, experienced workers, with up to 35,000 older workers (aged 50+) estimated to be missing from the industry. This is attributed to the lack of support for freelance workers, who make up a significant portion of the industry's workforce. The industry's retention problem is exacerbated by the shift of responsibility from employers to individuals, leading to a lack of investment in continuing professional development, advanced skills training, and career support. Women and those from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic communities are disproportionately affected by the brain drain. To address this issue, the concept of End-of-contract Interviews is proposed as a practical intervention to improve career support and retention in the television industry.
