Summary

The concept of family is complex and lacks a clear consensus, with different definitions and forms of family existing, including nuclear families, extended families, single parents, LGBTQ couples, and married couples without children. Most Americans agree that loving and caring relationships are what make a family, rather than a specific family form. The traditional image of a family, known as the Standard North American Family (SNAF), consists of a married heterosexual couple with children, but this idealized image does not reflect the reality of many families, particularly those of color, LGBTQ individuals, and people living in poverty. The SNAF ideology emerged in the 19th century with the separate spheres ideology, which held that men and women had distinct roles in the public and private spheres. However, this ideology was not the reality for most of the population, and it has been presented as universal despite its limitations.
