Summary

The average person is bombarded with a large amount of data daily, with the internet, TV, and mobile phones increasing the amount of information received by five times since 1986. In 2007, each person produced the equivalent of six 85-page newspapers daily. To navigate this information overload, individuals need to be information literate, which involves critical thinking, analyzing, and evaluating information to distinguish good from bad. Information literacy is defined as the ability to know when information is needed, identify relevant information, and locate, evaluate, and use it effectively. It is a crucial skill in the pursuit of knowledge and is required in professional worlds, such as criminal justice. The National Forum on Information Literacy and the Association of Colleges and Research Libraries have developed standards for information literacy, which include determining the extent of information needed, accessing information effectively, evaluating information critically, and incorporating selected information into one's knowledge base.
