Bill Hillier argues that Lévi-Strauss' view is limited, as it assumes that spatial phenomena will be on the same scale as the mental processes that govern them, and can be expressed through a mechanical model. However, Hillier suggests that space more commonly possesses the attributes of a statistical model, with differences between mechanical and statistical models being similar to those between types of marriage systems. He proposes that a statistical model of space would vary along three fundamental dimensions: the degree to which space is structured, the degree to which space is assigned specific social meanings, and the type of configuration used. A morphogenetic model, which conceives of rules as restrictions imposed on an otherwise random generative process, may be able to show a field of phenomena with these dimensions of variability to be a system of transformations.
