Summary

GCE Biology Revised Specification January 2010 report:
The AS 1 exam was straightforward, with a wide range of marks, but fewer candidates scored close to full marks.
Common issues included vague answers, not reading questions carefully, and calculation problems.
The skills question (Q4) was difficult for many, but use of biological terminology improved, notably in Q2 on water potential.
In AS 2, the paper was very discriminating, with several questions requiring interpretation of diagrams or analysis of experimental data.
Quality of written communication was generally good.
Grade boundaries were: A (240), B (210), C (180), D (150), E (120), with a maximum mark of 300.
