Summary

This study investigates children's understanding of metonymy, a figurative language use where an object is referred to by a salient property. Previous studies' results on metonymy comprehension in children are conflicting. This research aims to replicate and extend these findings using a novel eye-tracking and picture selection task.

- Method: 126 Norwegian-speaking children aged 3 to 8 and adults were shown four pictures and heard a story with either a literal or metonymic sentence. Their eye gaze and picture selection were recorded.

- Results: Picture selection replicated a U-shaped development, with 3-year-olds performing best, followed by a decline at 4-5 years, and improvement from age 6. Eye-tracking data showed early sensitivity to metonymy from age 3, but 4-5-year-olds experienced stronger competition from literal interpretations.

- Discussion: Children as young as 3 show sensitivity to metonymy, but their growing understanding of sense conventions may temporarily hinder pragmatic reasoning with non-literal uses. Offline and online measures tap different aspects of comprehension, with offline tasks potentially underestimating children's competence.

Description

Children's comprehension of metonymy, a figurative language use, is investigated through eye-tracking and picture selection. Metonymy is challenging for children due to the discrepancy between literal and communicated meaning. Previous studies suggest some understanding in preschool children, but results are conflicting.
