Attempt all the questions

1. Short Answers Questions (1 Marks Each; 1x8= 8 Marks)
i. Optical isomerism: compounds with same atoms and bonds but different spatial arrangements and non-superimposable mirror images.
ii. α helical structure of proteins: right-hand helix conformation with backbone N−H group hydrogen bonding to backbone C=O group.
iii. Sulphur containing amino acids: cysteine and methionine.
iv. Hydrophilic-hydrophobic interactions: hydrophobic interactions occur due to uncharged groups, while hydrophilic interactions occur with polar groups.
v. Globular proteins: spherical in shape, examples include myoglobin, hemoglobin, casein, and insulin.
vi. pI: isoelectric point, the pH at which a molecule carries no net electrical charge.
vii. Effect of pH on protein solubility: protein solubility increases with increasing pH, maximum solubility at pH 8.0.
viii. GS-GOGAT System: Glutamine oxoglutarate aminotransferase, manufactures glutamate from glutamine and α-ketoglutarate.

2. Medium Answer Questions (4 Marks each 2x4= 8 Marks)
i. Molecular chaperones: proteins that stabilize unfolded proteins, assist in correct folding and assembly, and prevent aggregation.
ii. Enantiomers of amino acids: stereoisomers that are mirror images of each other, can be named using D/L or R/S conventions.

3. Long Answer Questions (7 Marks each 2x7= 14 Marks)
i. Working principle and instrumentation of SDS-PAGE: separates proteins according to mass, uses polyacrylamide gel and SDS to linearize proteins, and electric voltage to separate polypeptides based on size.
