The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) tasks states and districts with designing standards and assessments, using multiple measures to assess student and school performance, documenting resource gaps, and considering evidence-based interventions to narrow the achievement gap. Creating an equitable classroom environment requires educators to be culturally competent, considering multiple cultural perspectives at institutional, personal, and instructional levels. District and site administrators, as well as teachers, play key roles in establishing an equitable environment by valuing diversity, having the capacity for cultural self-assessment, understanding the dynamics of cultural interactions, and institutionalizing cultural knowledge and adapting to diversity. Strategies for equitable classroom management include being sensitive to diverse cultures, monitoring discourse style, emphasizing a positive environment, and clarifying expectations.
