Innovation in creative cities is linked to the concentration of creative industries, with firms in areas with high creative industries employment more likely to introduce new products and processes. Analysis of 1,300 UK SMEs shows that firms in creative cities are 4% more likely to introduce new products and 3% more likely to introduce new processes, but this effect is not exclusive to creative industries firms. Medium-sized cities with strong creative economies are particularly important for new product innovations, suggesting that creative cities specialize in new content creation. The study finds no evidence that creative industries in creative cities are more innovative than firms in other sectors, and the advantage of creative cities is only for entirely new innovations, not innovations learned from elsewhere.
