Summary

The notion of transitivity in Coptic verbs is problematic, with researchers having extreme views on its applicability. Defining transitivity syntactically, the majority of Coptic verbs can be used both transitively and intransitively, but intransitive use of the infinitival form is mostly confined to non-durative tenses. Morphologically marked forms are transitive for non-durative tenses and intransitive for durative ones, making diathesis a defining property of Coptic conjugation patterns, with a separate class of 'Strong Transitives' that are not used intransitively.
