Summary

El aprendizaje significativo se refiere a la adquisición de nuevos significados y es un proceso en el que ideas expresadas simbólicamente se relacionan de modo no arbitrario con la estructura de conocimientos del alumno. Este proceso presupone que el alumno tenga una actitud hacia el aprendizaje significativo y que el material que aprende sea potencialmente significativo, es decir, relacionable con su estructura cognoscitiva de modo intencional y sustancial. La significatividad del material de aprendizaje depende de dos factores: la naturaleza del material y la estructura cognoscitiva del alumno. El material debe ser claro y no arbitrario para que pueda relacionarse con las ideas pertinentes del alumno, y el alumno debe tener una estructura cognoscitiva que permita la adquisición de significados. La significatividad potencial del material de aprendizaje varía según los antecedentes educativos, la edad, el coeficiente intelectual, la ocupación y la pertenencia a una clase social y cultura determinadas.
