The Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) consists of two papers: Paper I for classes I to V and Paper II for classes VI to VIII. Each paper has 150 multiple-choice questions with four alternatives, and each question carries one mark with no negative marking. The duration of each paper is two-and-a-half hours.

Paper I has five compulsory sections:
1. Child Development and Pedagogy (30 questions, 30 marks)
2. Language I (30 questions, 30 marks)
3. Language II (30 questions, 30 marks)
4. Mathematics (30 questions, 30 marks)
5. Environmental Studies (30 questions, 30 marks)

Paper II has four compulsory sections for different teaching positions:
1. Child Development & Pedagogy (30 questions, 30 marks)
2. Language I (30 questions, 30 marks)
3. Language II (30 questions, 30 marks)
4. Either Mathematics and Science (60 questions, 60 marks) for Mathematics and Science teachers or Social Studies/Social Science (60 questions, 60 marks) for Social Studies/Social Science teachers.

The questions in both papers are based on the syllabus prescribed by the NCERT for the respective classes, with a difficulty standard and linkages up to the Secondary stage for Paper I and the Senior Secondary stage for Paper II.
