Summary

The emergence of digital reading platforms requires a deep structured and explicit integration of micro- and macro-scale research methodologies. A proposed vision and framework for Digital Humanities (DH) involves a structural integration of empirical studies on reading and Humanities studies, such as reception studies and book history. The study of web comics, like Lore Olympus, can enable a study of reader engagement, emotional responses, and comparative reading, but risks diminishing their status as objects of Humanities research if not given in-depth attention. A systematic integration of critical studies and empirical data-driven research within DH is necessary, with a research framework based on three key components: the research programme, operational constraints, and value of research. This framework should address both context and depth, and consider the logical interdependency between experimental activities and critical interpretive studies. Ultimately, DH research on reading is a cultural challenge that requires cross-disciplinary collaborations, training, and a reevaluation of career progression, research evaluation, and interdisciplinarity.
