Digital textbooks are not meeting their potential to lower costs for students, with publishers' digital "e-textbooks" failing to meet three fundamental criteria: affordability, printing options, and accessibility. A survey of 504 students found that digital textbooks must be priced lower than traditional books, be straightforward and inexpensive to print, and be accessible online and offline. However, e-textbooks are too expensive, with an average cost equal to a new hard copy, and have limited printing options and accessibility. In contrast, digital "open textbooks" are a promising solution, meeting the three criteria and offering a more affordable and accessible alternative.
