Summary

Di Mascio, Ade, and Bradley investigated the reliability, validity, and sensitivity of a novel soccer-specific reactive repeated-sprint test (RRST). The test involved 8 repetitions of 30m sprints with brief recovery periods. Elite and sub-elite male and female soccer players completed the RRST at various times during a season. Results showed high test-retest reliability (0.71-0.84% coefficient of variation) and validity, with significant correlations between RRST performance and high-intensity running during matches (r = -0.71 to -0.74). The RRST distinguished between player positions, with central defenders performing worse than full backs, and between seasonal periods, with elite U16 players improving throughout the season. The study concluded that the RRST is a reliable and valid test for assessing soccer-specific repeated-sprint ability.
