The collaborators in this collection aim to rejuvenate and redefine Subject English, an academic staple that has been criticized for its outdated premises and practices. The contributors, from various education sectors, share their concerns and experiences with the current state of English teaching, highlighting issues such as tyranny, fear, and measurement. They seek to reimagine English as a subject that can reconfigure the worlds of young people, families, and communities, and explore new realities, knowledges, and literacies. The collection includes set-piece chapter statements and vignettes that offer an alternative history of Subject English, punctuating the volume with reflective moments and pauses. The vignettes speak to the memories and lived experiences of the contributors, eliciting emotive and provocative responses, and rupturing the linearity of the book. The collection is a dialogue, a participation, and a sharing between teachers, researchers, and educators, aiming to revive and rethink Subject English.
