Summary

This thesis explores the use of digital technology in penal practices in Scotland, specifically penal electronic monitoring (EM), through a technosocial ethnography. The research aims to understand how digital technology is used to punish people, and how it shapes experiences of punishment, by examining the networked governmentality of EM in Scotland. The study is based on 13 months of ethnographic fieldwork, including participant observation and interviews, and draws on Science and Technology Studies and actor-network theory. The thesis reveals EM as a messy and heterogeneous network of relationships, and a set of enacted and intimate performances embedded in everyday contexts, highlighting the complex interplay between technology, penal contexts, and human experiences.
