Terror management theory (TMT) postulates that people deal with mortality by defending their cultural worldviews, and reactions to mortality salience (MS) may depend on salient social norms. A meta-analysis of 64 effect sizes found a small-to-medium effect (g = 0.34) for the interaction between MS and norm salience, but bias-adjustment techniques suggested publication bias and/or researcher degrees of freedom, reducing the effect to nonsignificance in some cases. Preregistered, high-powered experiments are needed to increase confidence in the idea that MS and norm salience interact to influence behavior.
