Summary

Researchers Anna Brosius, Jakob Ohme, and Claes H. de Vreese investigated generational differences in media trust and its antecedents in Europe, using survey data from ten European countries collected in 2019. They found no differences in media trust levels between generations, but key correlates of media trust, such as political interest and perceptions of bias and inaccuracy, relate differently to media trust across generations. For example, political interest is more strongly correlated with media trust for Millennials, while perceptions of bias and inaccuracy have a stronger negative correlation with media trust for older generations. The study suggests that political socialization matters for how citizens translate views on the political sphere and the media system into trust in the media, but it does not seem to make a difference for the resulting levels of media trust.
