Summary

The Prequel explores the effects of married women's access to the contraceptive Pill on their educational and occupational outcomes. Using variation in state minimum-age marriage laws, the authors find that early marriage, made possible by these laws, precipitated marriage, delayed fertility within marriage, and improved the educational and occupational outcomes of women, especially non-college women. This challenges the prevailing view that the Pill's impact on women's careers was primarily through delayed marriage. Instead, fertility control, even within marriage, emerges as a key enabler of women's educational and professional advancement.
