Summary

This study explored mathematical difficulties in 1st class children from government and private schools. 50 children were given a math achievement test, and their errors were analyzed. The results showed that children had difficulties mostly in conceptual and procedural errors, followed by factual errors in number competence and basic mathematical operations. The errors were highest in horizontal subtractions (57% in government schools, 53% in private schools) and number names (47% in government schools, 59% in private schools). The study's findings can help teachers develop effective teaching methodologies to reduce the learning gap in children in the foundational years.
