Summary

Using a "wage ladder" model and linked employer-employee administrative data from Hungary, the authors find that even short periods of absence (3-12 months) decrease individuals' wages by around 2.5% for up to two years. The results also show that individuals reallocate to lower-paying employers, with 7-20% of the wage loss due to missed opportunities to switch employers. The authors conclude that temporary absence from work can have persistent detrimental effects on labor outcomes, even if there are no permanent labor productivity losses.
