Children with physical disabilities in the Netherlands face barriers to participating in outdoor playgrounds, despite improvements in accessibility. A qualitative study found that social barriers, such as stigma and exclusion, are more significant than physical barriers, and that professionals and society need to take an active role in promoting inclusive play and empowering children with disabilities and their parents. The study suggests that introducing outdoor active play early and changing the mindset of typically developing children and their parents are essential to achieving true inclusive active play.
