Summary

Researchers conducted a 4-year study on individual learners using online tasks at the University of Guanajuato, analyzing data through an activity-theoretical model. The study found that learners had difficulty moving beyond the task's objective to achieve language learning outcomes, relying heavily on orality and resisting a more literacy-based approach. A major systemic contradiction emerged, stemming from institutional and societal practices, leading learners to underuse learning tools and over-rely on memory and perception. The study used a cultural-historical activity-theoretical approach, analyzing video data from 10 intermediate language learners engaging with a purpose-built online task, and identified 23 dimensions and 6 processes to characterize the language learning activity.
