Summary

The Personal Inquiry project supports 11-14 year olds in learning 21st century science through active inquiry across formal and informal settings, using handheld and desktop technology. The project aims to incorporate inquiry learning activities within an extended school science environment, investigating opportunities for technological mediations and extracting design recommendations for mobile technology. A trial of the technology and learning across a school classroom, sports hall, and library was conducted, using a critical incident analysis to identify learning breakdowns and breakthroughs. The findings highlight the opportunities of combining mobile and fixed technology to manage group formation, display live visualizations, provide context-specific guidance, and support reflection and learning in the field. The project builds on previous research in inquiry learning and mobile devices, with a focus on linking formal classroom activities to informal settings.
