Summary

Private schools in the US are owned and governed by independent entities, primarily religious bodies or boards of trustees, and receive funding from nonpublic sources such as tuition payments and private donors. In contrast, public schools are governed by state and local education agencies and receive funding from local, state, and federal governments. Private schools have the characteristic of choice, where families choose private education and private schools may choose which students to accept.

In 1999-2000, approximately 27,000 private schools enrolled 5.3 million students, accounting for 24% of all schools, 10% of all students, and 12% of all full-time-equivalent teachers. 79% of private schools had a religious affiliation, with 30% affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church and 49% with other religious groups. The remaining 22% were nonsectarian. Private schools were primarily located in central cities (42%) and urban fringe or large towns (40%), with 18% in rural areas.

The data shows that private schools have maintained their share of total school enrollments at roughly 10-11% throughout recent decades, with growth rates parallel to those of public schools. The proportion of public school children attending a chosen school has increased in recent years, with 16% of public school students in grades 1-12 attending a school the family had chosen in 1999, up from 12% in 1993.
