Summary

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) collects international data for comparisons of education, including the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) Reading Literacy Study and the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). In 1997, 1.2 billion students were enrolled in schools worldwide, with 668 million in elementary-level programs, 398 million in secondary programs, and 88 million in higher education programs. The US had 515,000 foreign students in 1999-2000, with 54% from Asian countries. The 1995 TIMSS assessments showed US 4th-graders performed well in mathematics and science, while US 12th-graders scored below the international average. In 1999, US 8th-graders exceeded the international average in mathematics and science. Bachelor's degree ratios per hundred persons in 1999 ranged from 10 in Turkey to 37 in the UK and New Zealand, with the US at 33.
