Federal Public Service Commission's competitive examination for recruitment to posts in BPS-17 under the federal government, 2010, consists of an English (Precis & Composition) test with two parts. Part-I is a 10-minute multiple-choice question (MCQ) section with 10 marks, and Part-II is a 2-hour and 50-minute written section with 90 marks.

Part-I includes two sections:
1. Pick the word that is nearly similar in meaning to the capitalized word (do any five).
2. Indicate the most nearly opposite in meaning to the word in capital letters (do only five).

Part-II includes four questions:
1. Write a precis of the given passage in about 100 words and suggest a suitable title (20+5 marks).
2. Read the given passage and answer the questions that follow (20 marks).
3. Write a comprehensive note (250-300 words) on any one of the given topics (20 marks).
4. Use only five of the given phrases in sentences to illustrate their meaning (5 marks), and use only five of the given pairs of words in sentences to illustrate their meaning (10 marks).
5. Correct only five of the given sentences (5 marks), and change the narration from direct to indirect or indirect to direct speech for only five sentences (5 marks).
