You should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the function and use of a 555 integrated circuit to provide astable outputs, interpret output waveforms for astable circuits, and perform calculations using the formulas: Period T = 1/f and Frequency (Hz) = F = (1.44 / (R1 + 2R2)C). The 555 timer IC is stable, cheap, and reliable, and can be used as monostable or astable, with 8 legs in DIL format. Astable mode means the output is not stable, but instead pulses on and off continuously, with frequency determined by the RC network. The output of the 555 timer in astable mode continuously cycles through two output states, and the easiest way to recognize an astable circuit is if pins 2 and 6 are connected together. The frequency of an astable circuit can be changed, and these circuits can be used to flash lights and LEDs. The astable waveform is a square wave with sharp transitions between low and high states. The time period and frequency of the output are connected, with the formula: f = 1.44 / (R1 + 2R2) x C1.
