Summary

Faculty attitudes about online learning have been a topic of national investigation, with consistently negative results reported. However, a replication study of a recent national study found that faculty in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, which has a culture that supports online education, held more positive attitudes towards online learning. The study found that 27.6% of academic leaders believed faculty at their college accepted online education, but only 9% of professors nationwide strongly believed outcomes for online learning were equivalent to classroom outcomes. In contrast, the SUNY study found more positive attitudes, suggesting that context can predict variability in attitudes and that a positive culture of online education may influence faculty attitudes. The study's results are based on a survey of 402 SUNY faculty members who had taught an online course or had not, and the data was compared to a recent national study. The study's findings suggest that faculty attitudes about online education vary with context and may be amenable to change.
