Summary

Researchers examined financial literacy in Germany using the SAVE survey, finding that women, the less educated, and those in East Germany lacked knowledge of basic financial concepts. Low education and income individuals in East Germany had particularly low financial literacy compared to their West German counterparts. However, there was no gender disparity in financial knowledge in East Germany. The study used an IV strategy to investigate the relationship between financial literacy and retirement planning, finding a positive impact of financial knowledge on retirement planning. The German pension system's recent reforms and the introduction of the Riester scheme have increased individuals' responsibility to provide privately for their retirement, making financial literacy a crucial topic. Despite high subsidies, participation in the Riester scheme among low-income households is low, and these households also show lower levels of financial literacy. The study aims to provide an overview of financial literacy in Germany, identify groups at risk of low financial knowledge, and link financial knowledge to retirement planning.
