Summary

This study examines the career decision-making perspectives of low-income urban youth from Latino, African American, and Asian communities in the Los Angeles area. The research involved 9 focus groups with 91 youth aged 15-18 and found that these youth face challenges in planning and preparing for their careers due to limited access to information and resources. The study highlights the need for policymakers and workforce preparation professionals to provide low-income youth with clear and concrete information about careers and the workplace. The research also suggests that career development programs often fail to address the contextual issues that impact low-income minority youth, such as economic pressure to enter the workforce early and lack of education or vocational preparation. The study's findings have implications for developing more effective career guidance strategies for low-income youth from diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds.
