Summary

The Indo-European language family has 10 fully documented branches and several 'minor' languages, with a complex family tree that doesn't fit typical subgrouping patterns. The discovery of Hittite and Tocharian has shaken the view of the Indo-European family tree, and recent discoveries, such as the decipherment of Linear B and the identification of the Mycenaean dialect of Greek, have called into question the standard view of Indo-European subgrouping and dispersal. Johanna Nichols' dynamic approach to linguistic geography suggests that multiple branching at the root of a family tree points to abrupt dispersal of the protolanguage in a large spread, but this conflicts with the standard archaeological view of the Indo-European 'homeland' and dispersal. The author suggests that the discoveries of the second half of the 20th century, such as the facts of Mycenaean Greek, confuse the reconstruction of Proto-Greek and imply that some innovations are due to post-Mycenaean and post-Common Greek changes that occurred independently in various dialects.
