Summary

The UniSAFE survey, funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 program, collected data on gender-based violence in European academia from 46 universities and research organizations in 15 countries. The survey, conducted from January to May 2022, had a response rate of 3.9%, with 42,186 respondents, and found that 67% of respondents identified as women, 30% as men, and 3% as non-binary. The survey investigated experiences of gender-based violence, consequences, and institutional mechanisms, and defined gender-based violence as violence directed towards a person because of their gender, including physical, sexual, psychological, and economic forms. The results show that 11% of respondents reported having a disability or chronic illness, 6% identified as ethnic minorities, and 18% identified as LGBQ+. The survey aimed to capture how gendered experiences intersect with factors like sexual orientation, age, and international mobility, which may exacerbate exposure to gender-based violence.
