Summary

The DUDEN dictionaries' lexicological concept is criticized for being androcentric and inconsistent in its treatment of feminine forms, perpetuating a pre-feminist image of women as limited to traditional female roles. The dictionaries' principles of economy, which aim to omit feminine terms in favor of masculinized forms, are not consistently applied, leading to an inconsistent and biased representation of women's professions and roles. The analysis of two case studies, the DUDEN PAPERBACKS and the RECHTSCHREIBDUDEN, reveals that the number of feminizations is not directly related to the size of the dictionary, but rather to prescriptive androcentric ideas about gender. The larger DUDEN editions are found to be more consistent in their treatment of feminizations and masculinizations, but still neglect to masculinize traditionally female professional fields.
