Summary

Newcomer youth face unique psychosocial needs due to stressors during migration, and they experience academic, emotional, and behavioral difficulties. A mixed-methods study using Group Concept Mapping (GCM) was conducted to identify considerations for developing programming to support newcomer youths' healthy development. Thirty-seven newcomers aged 14-22 participated in focus groups, and their ideas were analyzed to produce a concept map. Six key concepts emerged: creating a space for sharing, discussing relational issues, teaching strategies for adjusting to a new country, teaching wellness skills, having feel-good activities, and planning for diversity. Incorporating youth voice into programming development can help produce culturally-relevant materials and improve program outcomes.
