Summary

Onderzoek heeft aangetoond dat de kwantiteit en kwaliteit van het taalaanbod van ouders een grote invloed heeft op de latere taalontwikkeling van kinderen. LENA (Language Environment Analysis) is een tool die ontwikkeld is om het taalaanbod van kinderen thuis te meten. LENA bestaat uit een klein recordertje dat 16 uur aan continue spraak kan opnemen en vervolgens analyseert met behulp van software. Het kan verschillende sprekers identificeren en labelen, en berekent variabelen zoals het aantal beurtwisselingen, het aantal vocalisaties van het kind en het aantal gesproken woorden door een volwassene. Een pilotstudie met LENA heeft geen verschil gevonden in de kwantiteit van het taalaanbod tussen peuters met taalontwikkelingsstoornissen (TOS) en peuters zonder TOS. Wel is gebleken dat de kwaliteit van de taalinput en de interactie tussen ouder en kind een belangrijke rol speelt in de taalontwikkeling van kinderen met TOS. LENA kan een waardevolle aanvulling zijn op de huidige praktijk van logopedisten en ouderbegeleiders.
