Summary

The newly discovered papyrus of Empedocles confirms a proposed "fingerprint test" for Empedoclean imitations in Lucretius, involving the near juxtaposition of two or more compound adjectives. Applying this test, a lost passage of Empedocles is identified in Lucretius 5.864-7, which acknowledges doctrinal common ground between the two poets regarding the principle of the survival of the fittest. The new Empedocles fragments shed light on Lucretius' poetic influence and may lead to the recovery of a lost Empedoclean passage. Lucretius criticizes Empedocles' theory of the four elements but concedes that Empedocles made great discoveries, possibly referring to his physical explanations of celestial phenomena. The new fragments may support the conjecture that Lucretius acknowledged philosophical kinship with Empedocles on the theory of the origin of species by natural selection.
