The UK faces a severe skills crisis in engineering and manufacturing, with a halved workforce in the last 30 years and low interest among young people. Research surveyed 1,500 UK citizens aged 11-19 and identified five broad categories ("Tribes") of adolescent attitudes to STEM: STEM Devotees, Social Artists, Enthused Unfocused, Individualists, and Less Engaged. Each Tribe has shared values, beliefs, and attitudes, and requires different approaches to encourage STEM engagement. Recommendations include tailoring programmes to each Tribe's diverse values and attitudes, supporting enthusiastic but confidence-lacking students, and showcasing a broad range of modern technologies to illustrate engineering's diverse nature.
