This paper provides causal evidence on the effect of mass immigration on invention using the 1920s Quota Acts, which reduced immigration from Southern and Eastern Europe. The study finds that inventors in cities exposed to fewer low-skilled immigrants applied for fewer patents, driven by fewer patent applications in industries that lost the most immigrant workers. For every 10% reduction in new immigrants, inventors reduced their patent applications.
