The course presents fundamentals of cellular and molecular immunology, covering the structure, function, and genetics of the immune system, regulation of humoral and cell-mediated responses, and the role of the immune system in human disease.
Required text: The Immune System by Peter Parham, 5th Edition.
Course objectives include identifying cellular and humoral components of the human immune system, comparing and contrasting innate and adaptive immune responses, and describing how the immune system responds to pathogens.
Classroom expectations and policies include being prepared for lecture and lab, arriving early, and no cell phones or electronic devices during class.
The instructor reserves the right to amend these rules as needed throughout the term.
E-mail policy: instructor responds to e-mails during regular school hours.
Attendance policy: students are expected to attend all meetings, absences may lower grade, and excused absences include death of an immediate family member, summons to appear in court, call to military service, university-sponsored event, and debilitating illness.
Exam policies: no make-up exams, cumulative portion of the final exam used for excusable absences.
