The Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA) is a short, interactive, and practical assessment of a child's early literacy, communication, language, and mathematics skills at the start of reception class. It is statutory for all schools from September 2021 and aims to provide a starting point to measure the progress schools make with their pupils. The assessment is not about judging or labelling the child, and they cannot 'pass' or 'fail'. It will provide an opportunity for the child to have one-to-one time with their teacher, allowing the teacher to get to know the child better and support them in the most appropriate way. The data from the assessment will be used to measure the progress of the child's year group from reception to year 6, and will not be shared with parents, pupils, or external bodies.
