Summary

Contemporary innovation theorists defend a combination of Schumpeterian and Keynesian politics to direct new technologies towards socially just outcomes, while Hayekian theorists argue that top-down state interventions suffer from epistemological and moral problems, instead promoting a spontaneous institutional environment conducive to entrepreneurship. Both camps rely on liberal notions of morality and politics, focusing on distributive justice and overlooking relational equality in innovation, failing to eliminate unjust relations of exploitation and oppression. Introducing principles and politics from the bottom-up, which equalize social relations through an appropriate distribution of risks and rewards, is necessary for directing innovation towards social justice.
