Despite statistics showing that schools are relatively safe, with children more likely to be involved in violent crime at home or in their neighborhoods, the magnitude and impact of school shootings have contributed to this perception. Characteristics of recent school shootings, such as the number of killed and wounded, randomness of victim selection, and careful planning, have made them more devastating. Reactive measures, such as metal detectors and security guards, have been implemented, but they do not address the underlying causes of violence and may even encourage some students to bring weapons to school. A proactive approach, focusing on constructive conflict resolution education, can help create safer schools and improve students' cognitive skills. This approach teaches students methods of conflict resolution, providing a student-driven mechanism for creating safer schools while improving problem-solving abilities. Approximately 15,000 to 20,000 public schools engage in some form of conflict resolution education, and strategies such as curriculum integration, peer mediation training, and school building safety education can help students learn life skills and avoid dangerous situations.
