The idea of quantum computation was pioneered in the 1980s by Feynman and Deutsch, with the goal of using quantum mechanics to perform computations more efficiently than classical computers. The basic idea is to engineer multi-particle systems to perform interesting computations exponentially faster than classical computers. This course will cover the quantum circuit model of computation, quantum algorithms, and the limits of quantum computation. The quantum circuit model is based on classical Boolean circuits, reversible classical circuits, and randomized computation. Any Boolean function can be computed by a Boolean circuit using AND, OR, and NOT gates, and these gates are universal. The size of the circuit corresponds to running time in the Turing Machine model. The course will also cover the use of ancillas and the universality of NAND and DUPE gates.
