They measured the swing ratio produced by drummers on the ride cymbal in three well-known jazz recordings and a play-along record, finding a substantial and gradual variation with respect to tempo, ranging from 3.5:1 at slow tempi to 1:1 at fast tempi. The absolute duration of the short note in the long-short pattern was constant at about 100 ms for medium to fast tempi. The study also examined the soloist's timing in relation to the accompaniment, finding that soloists played behind the beat at slow tempi but were synchronized with the cymbal at off-beats, implying a smaller swing ratio than the cymbal accompaniment.
