R1 University Research Lab stakeholders expect BME students to possess various technical and soft skills. Technical skills include:
- Circuits: basic knowledge, solving circuit equations, and experience with testing and debugging
- Programming: proficiency in at least one industry-standard language, programming microcontrollers, and using technical languages
- CAD: navigating and designing using CAD software
- Design Process: exposure to the design process, with established experience preferred
- Mathematics: basic engineering courses, complex linear algebra, data structures, and machine learning
- Quantitative Analysis: quantitative focus, familiarity with descriptive statistics, and experience with probabilistic modeling
- Design Skills: design experience, completing projects, and conducting large-scale independent or group design projects
- Electronics: solving basic electronics problems, debugging arbitrary circuits, and developing novel circuitry
- Modeling: using COMSOL or CAD software, and independently developing novel models
- Programming: using technical programming, microcontroller programming, and developing novel programs
- Research: interpreting technical literature, experience with project management, and seeking opportunities to use skills in research or industry

Soft skills include:
- Writing: educated language use, technical writing samples, and completing science papers in proper format
- Team Engagement: being helpful to others on the team, and prioritizing group work over individual expertise
- Graphics Editing: producing graphical information and editing skills, with the ability to produce rather than delegate graphical work being desirable.
