Summary

People know more than the information they're exposed to, a problem known as Plato's Problem. A new theory, Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA), simulates learning by inducing global knowledge from local co-occurrence data in text, acquiring knowledge at a rate comparable to schoolchildren. LSA uses a mathematical learning method to extract dimensions and represent objects and contexts, achieving powerful inductive effects without prior linguistic or perceptual similarity knowledge. The model's results show that a substantial portion of vocabulary test questions can be inferred from contextual statistics of usage alone, questioning the need for specialized primitive structures and processes in knowledge acquisition.
